Summary

Feed represents the largest operating cost on a dairy farm, so understanding its composition and how the cow utilizes each nutrient is essential for making decisions that improve profitability and herd performance. Understanding what happens in the rumen and throughout the digestive process allows producers to formulate more efficient diets, identify opportunities for improvement, and make better use of available farm resources.

This presentation focused on the three most important nutrients in dairy cow nutrition: fiber, protein, and fat. It will explain the role each plays in rumen’s health, milk production, and feed efficiency, as well as the factors that affect their digestion and utilization by the animal.

In addition, practical recommendations and strategies that producers can implement on their farms were shared to optimize nutrient utilization, reduce losses, and improve feed efficiency. The goal was to provide simple, practical tools that help maximize milk production from every pound or kilogram of feed consumed.
