Summary

Calf diarrhea is a long-standing challenge for dairy producers around the world. It is so persistent that the prevalence of this disease has not changed over the last 30 years, despite significant advances in dairy calf research and medicine. Because it is a multifactorial disease, meaning that diarrhea is not caused solely by the presence of a specific bacterium or virus, its management is challenging and often frustrating for both producers and farm workers.

In this presentation, Dr. Sebastián Umaña Sedó Assistant Professor, Production Management Medicine at Virginia Tech discusses modifiable factors that producers can incorporate into their daily routines to prevent and control neonatal calf diarrhea, as well as the key elements needed to develop an effective diarrhea treatment protocol at both the group and individual animal levels.
