Fresh cow diseases such as ketosis, milk fever, displaced abomasum, retained placenta, metritis, and mastitis have a huge impact on the overall health of an animal. In addition to the health of the animal there are other factors including lost milk production, longer days to cycle and get pregnant, plus the cost to treat these fresh cow diseases.

A dairy farm scene showing adult Holstein cows standing near a newborn calf lying in straw. The image has a red banner at the bottom with text reading 'HEALTHY TRANSITION COWS' and includes the University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension logo.

However, can manage fresh cow metabolic diseases by paying attention to the following:

    • Diet composition of dry cow, prefresh, and fresh cow rations
    • Feedbunk management including bunk and resting space
    • Stress management along with heat stress mitigation

Fresh cow diseases like ketosis and mastitis impact cow health, reduce milk production, and increase treatment costs. To manage these diseases, focus on proper diet, feedbunk management, and stress reduction.
